1988 Merkur XR4Ti

The sawzall/chicken wire–grille mod is hugely popular with the XR4Ti tuner crowd.

     Equal parts brilliant experiment and utter failure, the XR4Ti (and the Merkur marque for that matter) fell into the coulda-woulda-shoulda category once Ford abandoned the concept after only 5 years. The XR4Ti was essentially a Ford Sierra that was hand-built by Ghia in Germany. The one thing that always left me wondering was why Ford would bring another rally-derived car over from Europe to compete with its very popular and capable 1st gen Escort GT.

  1. Love these oddities. I'd park it between my Mustang SVO and Cosworth Escort.

  2. I completely understand why ford would bring it over, because it was wonderful. They should have found a better name than merkur, and allowed it to be as fast as the SVO, it could have been far faster than the mustang, especially around turns, but ford wouldnt allow that. Maybe i'm biased, as i have one.
